Today's release is Opus at its best: A gorgeous Napa bottling that is singing now but promises decades of evolution. A creamy entry gives way to layers of complexity which unfold in the mid-palate with velvety tannins enrobing a center of concentrated black fruit with juicy freshness. Robert Parker calls it not only “one of the great wines of Napa,” but “the pinnacle of French viticultural knowledge combined with that of California and Napa’s Shangri La-like microclimate.” The Opus One 2013 offers splendid aromas of blueberry, cassis, and blackberries with highlights of rose, anise and baking spices. Grown on the estate’s four vineyard plots-the Ballestra and River Parcels, which flank the winery, as well as To Kalon North and South across Highway 29-the Left Bank-style blend is one of the most coveted, envied, and emulated wines on the planet. Since its first vintage in 1979, Opus One has become the red wine that represents California to the world. Opus One is the realized dream of two men: Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux and Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi. And finally, it would be different and unique. Second, it would reflect the partnership between the Mondavi and Rothschild families. The two luminaries struck a partnership eight years later, and agreed on a simple three-point philosophy: First, Opus One would be a classic Bordeaux-style wine. When he met Robert Mondavi in 1970, Baron Philippe knew he had his man. The Opus One story began when Baron Philippe de Rothschild (of Bordeaux First Growth Mouton Rothschild) conceived of a Bordeaux-Napa Valley project. We’re thrilled to announce that our visit yielded the kind of allocation that normally only comes at auction: a rare release of 2013 Opus One, a library selection that will pay delicious dividends for decades. 2013 OPUS ONE ROBERT MONDAVI WOOD WINE BOX COMPLETE WITH INSERTS. Everyone in the company headed north on Silverado Trail to the Oakville AVA, to make our first official visit to the pristine winery that brought First Growth Bordeaux and the best of Napa Valley together: Opus One. So on a beautiful August day, the Wine Access offices in the town of Napa emptied. But realistically, we’d been looking forward to it for years. This will always be beautiful to drink.Technically, we’d had the appointment for about a month. 79% cabernet sauvignon, 7% cabernet franc, 6% merlot, 6% petit verdot, 2% malbec. But will be even better in 2019 and beyond. Complex aftertaste of black fruits and citrus fruit. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it slowly grows on the nose, revealing compelling notes of baked black cherries, mulberries, black raspberries, warm cassis and blackberry pie with nuances of spice. Full body, superb balance of ultra-fine tannins and vibrant acidity. The 2017 Opus One, bottled in July 2019, is a blend of 81 Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5 Petit Verdot, 5 Cabernet Franc, 4.5 Merlot and 1 Malbec. Roses continue to exude opulence and class. Terrific aromas of crushed black currants, blueberries, and flowers with hints of sweet tobacco. Despite sporadic stops due to weather events, the relatively compressed harvest was completed on October 8th. Beautifully full-bodied and extraordinarily elegant and pure, this is certainly one of their great achievements over the last 37 years. Velvety textured, without a had edge to be found, notes of creme de cassis, blueberry, subtle wood and floral notes gently rise from the wine?s dense purple color. The 2013 Opus One, a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Malbec, is a beauty. Max scoring Opus, we tasted this magnificent 100 points Opus One and were suprised by the elegancy and readiness to drink for such a young wine. We will receive our allocation in about 3 weeks, so no picture yet.
